“Viehscheid”
At the end of the alpine summer, a very special spectacle awaits us every year: The “Viehscheid”. Colorful hustle and bustle, crowned cows and ringing bells - the “Viehscheid” is traditionally celebrated. If you have the opportunity to experience a traditional “Viehscheid”, you should definitely do so - it is an unforgettable feeling when the herds come down to the valley together with their shepherds.

“Klausentreiben”
When the time for cozy winter evenings comes, the customs come to life in Oberstdorf. Like one of the oldest customs, the “Klausentreiben” on December 6th.

The “Wilde Mändle” of Oberstdorf
A custom that has been preserved since 615 AD. The “Trachtenverein Oberstdorf” proudly maintains what is probably the oldest cult dance in German-speaking countries - the “Wilde Mändle” dance. It is the aim of the association to preserve this and to pass it on to posterity.

Alpine farming
Lush green mountain meadows, the ringing of cowbells and the wonderful tranquility in the Allgäu mountains. All of these are the motives of our “alpine farmers” to move up again every year and to cultivate the surrounding Alps from Oberstdorf. Under the following link you can find out more and about the Allgäu alpine economy and the production of our delicious cheese and milk products.
